Families provide winter fun at Hasselfield Lake

You can choose either hockey or curling at the rink on Hasselfield Lake. Built and maintained by the Betts and Dunn families, everyone involved must play by the COVID rules, keeping safe distances, when they are out to have fun.

Community spirit at its finest is evident at Hasselfield Lake. Bob and Ann Betts made the lake their home in 2012 and started what has become a yearly tradition - a ready-made outdoor rink on the lake. Each year the rink has evolved - getting bigger and better. This year’s additions include a fire pit and benches. In 2018 Scott and Debbie Dunn moved to the lake and joined forces with the Betts to create the outdoor venue.
“We’ve become great friends and each year we dream up new ways to make the rink better and more inclusive,” said Scott. “It’s really become a community project. People are always dropping off things to help with the rink. This year it is a regulation size rink - 80 ft. wide x 200 feet long and includes blue lines, red lines – it’s very authentic.”

As an added attraction, there are curling ring. A side by side is used as a Zamboni and the surface is flooded every day.
“I am retired so I have time and go down to the rink every morning to get it ready, but it is really the four of us –Bob and Ann and Debbie and I that make it happen.”
As for following COVID guidelines, Scott says people are using their common sense and are making sure to social distance. Everyone is very respectful and using safe practices.
“We are so happy to provide this for the community, especially this year for the kids with all the rinks closed. During the Christmas break it was so great to see the kids get outside, get exercise and have fun.”
The Betts and Dunns are rewarded with tons of positive feedback and appreciation.
