“The purpose of the fair is to allow students to showcase their scientific talent. It is the search for knowledge and to foster curiosity and creativity.”
Students get to choose their own topics. If a teacher assigns the projects, they will get time to work on them in class. If not, they do the work on their own. However, Birch said he and Beghin offered after school help twice a week if they needed the support.
One unique aspect of the fair is the judging. Although it is only the second year Birch has chaired the event, he said Boissevain has always used community judges. This year there were 60 who came out, not only from the general community, but also members of the Grade 12 class. He added they bring something special to the mix.
“The judges bring an impartial view to the project, which allows the project to stand on its merit,” he stated. “The judges are a critical part of the science fair and it couldn’t take place without them. Their involvement is greatly appreciated.”
Each judge had two or three students to evaluate. They have a rubric that identifies four parts. Scientific thought makes up 40%, while originality and creativity, communication and mentorship are each worth 20%.
The gym was full of different subjects of scientific enquiry, from what makes a strongest bridge to what kind of chocolate Easter eggs tastes the best. Some students made eggs rubbery, while others made plastic.
“The quality of the projects was impressive. The students have plenty of reasons to be proud of the work they did and the conversations I heard about the projects was positive. Hannah and I were definitely proud of the students.”
The next step is the Western Manitoba Science Fair, held at Brandon University on Tuesday, April 9. There are 33 projects that qualified from Boissevain, those that scored high enough for a blue ribbon.
In Brandon, the top four projects from Gr 7-12 will be eligible to advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair. Birch said those who attend WMSF have an opportunity to connect with other students from the province.
He said there is a lot that goes into planning a science fair. Entry forms, making a student booklet, arranging for judges, setting up and taking down the gym – these are only a few of the duties.
However, it is very worthwhile. Birch and Beghin thanked all of the students, judges, families, staff and community members for their help in making it a success, something with great value to all participants.
“I believe that the benefits students gain from participating in a science fair are endless. They have the opportunity to express themselves, gain skills in planning and organization, think independently, and communicate their ideas,” Birch stated.
