On Saturday, August 23, a group of five women on their motorcycles left Melita for the third annual Southwest Ladies Ride. They were joined by six more riders at Virden and Brandon and rode together to Killarney for an ice cream break at The Beach Hut before continuing their trek down Highway #3 back to Melita.

The Ride is organized by two business owners and motorcycle enthusiasts out of Melita, Rhonda Dickson and Stacy Downey, who have been riding for 25 and five years respectively. Dickson said that she had been riding with men for most of her life, so she wanted to get a group of like-minded women together, too.

“It’s so empowering,” she said. “Some of us have nothing in common except bikes, but we get together and have a great time.”

Other women in the group echoed her sentiments. Some mentioned the feel-good vibes of being in a group of women with similar interests, and others talked about feeling less intimidated to ask questions.

In addition to fellowship and feeling the wind in their hair, the group canvased for donations and raised $710 for the Melita Health Auxiliary.

Dickson said that the ride usually happens on the same weekend every summer and that normally there are between 15 and 20 riders that participate, but she extends a welcome to any woman that rides a motorcycle, no matter how long they have been riding.
