Cherry Creek Place to add indoor parking

A new parking option will soon be available at Cherry Creek Place active living centre, with an indoor parking garage planned for the near future. A new parking option will soon be available at Cherry Creek Place active living centre, with an indoor parking garage planned for the near future.

If all goes to plan, residents at Cherry Creek Place in Boissevain will have the originally planned indoor parking option by the time winter begins this year.

The seniors’ active living home has put out a call for proposals to build a parking garage. According to Southwest Senior Housing Board Chair George Heide, this development had been in the organization’s mind for a long time.

“It is an idea that has been in place for ages,” Heide stated. “When we originally built, we couldn’t afford it. Residents have been asking for it. The need is there, the requests are there and we thought it was time to step up and build it.”

There is presently outdoor parking for residents at the back of the building to the west. However, there is an obvious need for something indoors, particularly when dealing with seniors.

“There are difficulties for some people to get around. They can still drive, but their mobility makes it difficult for them to clean the snow off their vehicles, to get around outside. There are people who are willing to rent space in a parking garage and we want to accommodate them.”

The plan is for the structure to be built on the northwest corner of the Cherry Creek Place building. One of the big pluses will be the space being connected to the complex, so those with parking spots will not have to go outside to get to their vehicle. Heide said this is important, as they might be carrying things back and forth, and they will not have to deal with inclement weather while doing so.

They are looking at having 20 indoor parking spaces. They will not be available for all residents in the 35-suite facility. Heide said rent would be charged to those who want an indoor space and there still will be outdoor spots. As well, he added, not every resident still has a vehicle.

He said they have a good idea what they are looking for, but the proposals they are asking for will also give direction on size and design, adding they would like some storage space in the new structure. Heide added they hope the cost will be reasonable, and that too will be determined when proposals come in.

The last date for proposals is June 30 at noon.

“I hope there is good, local response,” Heide stated. “There will be an option for locals to get involved for sure. I don’t have a clue how many people will respond. It will depend how busy they are.”

Heide said there might be several contractors involved, as they might complete different parts of the project from the actual construction to electrical work.

They would like to get started right away. The hope is they could have the garage up and running by the time the snow flies in winter 2026. Getting to work and getting it done is key.

“We want to make life as convenient for our people as possible. We want to add comfort and convenience.”

Cherry Creek Place has been one of Boissevain’s successes. The area is also looking to house a second phase, a 60 bed supportive housing facility next door to what they have. This is currently being budgeted for an assessment study. Heide said both the existing Cherry Creek Place and other developments are needed in the community and area.

“People need housing and care,” he explained. “There are needs as people age, and we want to keep them here and bring more people here. Why not make it a place people can come to? We have a good system here, good health care. Why not develop this?”
