The word ‘home’ is associated with variety of images and emotions. At its heart lie the feelings of warmth, security, peace, happiness and the opportunity to be oneself.

Dr. Alexander McKinnon would add family, friends and joy to the list as he has moved home to Deloraine to practice medicine in the area.

Following graduation from Deloraine School in 2007, McKinnon played junior hockey with the Dauphin Kings for two years. His studies took him to New Brunswick for an undergrad in Biology and masters in Biochemistry in London, Ontario, where he also met his future wife Meghan. His studies concluded in Winnipeg where he graduated from Medicine in 2019.

McKinnon’s first family practice was in Twillingate, Newfoundland from 2019-2021, where the McKinnon’s son Angus was born. The next two years were spent at Three Rivers, Prince Edward Island.

The desire to move home to Deloraine was never far from McKinnon’s mind.

“I always wanted to come back. I love Deloraine, it’s my favourite place, and it’s where my family and friends are. Most of my good buddies are there.”

The initial plan was for McKinnon to begin working as a family physician in Prairie Mountain Health in the summer of 2024. This was fast tracked by one year.

“The PMH recruitment should be complimented. They did an awesome job making it easy to get to this point. I’ve been through three sets of recruitments and PMH by far was the best.”

Dr. McKinnon is excited to be working with Dr. Sharma, Dr. Thind and Dr. Nell. He will have clinic time in both Deloraine and Melita clinics and will be taking on-call at Deloraine.

As far as recreation, McKinnon says he might curl and hopes in the spring to make the cut for the Deloraine Royals senior ball team.
